Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
